Weather by season

What Bariloche is like in each season

Bariloche is four destinations in one depending on the time of year. Here's what to expect from the weather — and what to pack — to plan your getaway.

Summer

December – February

22–26 °C by day · 8–11 °C at night

Long days and the lake

The best season for the outdoors. Warm, bright days that stretch past nine at night, perfect for the shore of Lake Nahuel Huapi, boat trips and trekking. Mornings and nights cool down — it's the mountains — so a light jacket never hurts.

What to pack
Light layers, sunscreen, a thin jacket for the evening, comfortable walking shoes.
Best for
Lake beaches, kayaking, the Circuito Chico, trekking to Refugio Frey.

Autumn

March – May

12–18 °C by day · 3–6 °C at night

The forests catch fire

Perhaps the most photogenic season: the lenga and ñire forests turn red, ochre and gold. Crisp, clear air, fewer crowds and gentler prices. It can rain, and the nights call for a coat, but the sunny afternoons are a treat.

What to pack
Warm layers, a waterproof jacket, a light hat for the evening.
Best for
The Circuito Chico at its most colorful, Cerro Campanario, the chocolate shops on Mitre.

Winter

June – August

3–8 °C by day · -3–2 °C at night

Snow season

Bariloche in full snow-mountain mode. Cerro Catedral — South America's largest ski resort — opens its runs, and the city fills with winter life. Short, cold days with frequent snowfall up high. Bundling up is the rule.

What to pack
Snow jacket, gloves, hat and scarf, waterproof boots, thermal layers.
Best for
Skiing and snowboarding at Cerro Catedral, hot chocolate, the snow-covered Centro Cívico.

Spring

September – November

12–19 °C by day · 3–7 °C at night

Thaw and blossom

The transition: the snow melts, the days lengthen and everything blooms. Changeable, often windy weather — it can swing from sun to rain in an afternoon — but with glorious, still-quiet days before the high season.

What to pack
Versatile layers, a waterproof windbreaker, something warm for the temperature swings.
Best for
The Circuito Chico, lookout points, the season's first hikes.
